All six episodes of Bright Falls now available online

If you’re hoping to get acquainted with the world of Alan Wake before the game’s extremely imminent release, you may want to watch the six-part mini-series Bright Falls, all of which is now available on Machinima’s YouTube channel. Regardless of whether or not you understand a lick of what transpires during the Twin Peaks-esque series, it’s still a really well-made tie-in, and gives a great sense of the unsettling environments the titular Wake will be exploring.

If you want more information about Bright Falls after viewing the series, we suggest checking out our interview with co-writer and director Phillip Van.

Watch: Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5 and Episode 6

Zelda 2 remade in …

If you just can’t deal with Zelda as a side-scroller, good news: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link has been remade in 3D! Credit goes to one Michael A. Johnston, who designed this fan remake as a Unity-based game that you can play right in your browser. Zelda II FPS is an impressive feat, combining authentic 8-bit textures with brand new 3D models of all the creatures and environments.

It’s also freaking impossible. Even the once docile slime enemies are now dangerous, since you can’t tell when there are three of them right behind you. Enjoy being murdered repeatedly by weak enemies, for now, before Nintendo catches wind of this project — which it will, now that people like us are telling everybody — and likely shuts it down. Sorry!

Alleged Kinect hardware specs claim two active player limit

During E3, PrimeSense, the company behind the Kinect hardware, told Joystiq that the system it had licensed to Microsoft could only handle a maximum of two active players at a time. PrimeSense couldn’t confirm at the time that Kinect could only calculate two players, and Microsoft didn’t comment further when we asked, but leaked Kinect technical specifications from a few UK retailers seem to match up with the two “active” player limit. The leaked technical specifications claim that the Kinect camera can recognize any number of human bodies, but can only calculate the movement and actions of two people at a time.

Other interesting specs have the camera pulling in a video view with a 640×480 resolution at 30fps, and an echo cancellation system in the mic that will make voice chat possible directly through Kinect. The information also explains what the original Xbox 360 will need for the device: 175 MB of memory for system drivers and an open USB port (to connect Kinect).

Of course, these specifications aren’t yet official, and they’re strictly for the hardware — not every game will support camera output or voice chat.

We didn’t think there was anything slower in the whole, entire universe than one of Gears of War 3‘s lumbering, impossibly muscle-bound protagonists. We were wrong — as evidenced by the two GameTrailers videos posted after the break, that honor goes to the new Beast Mode’s “Berserker” character.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift is set to launch on July 27 and, soon thereafter, fight fans will be able to download an additional character, Makoto. Rather than provide you with some hum-drum stills of the new character, we’ve got the next best thing: actual gameplay footage. Peep it past the break.

The Xbox Live Arcade versions of both Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure were playable at Sega’s booth, and both still look great, even ten-plus years after their release. However, each game has one issue that keeps the XBLA (and PSN) version from absolute perfection.

In Crazy Taxi‘s case, it’s the lack of licensed music and locations, meaning that destinations like Pizza Hut have been replaced by generic stores, and the Offspring and Bad Religion soundtrack has been swapped out for sorta/kinda soundalikes. Actually, given how many times we’ve heard the Crazy Taxi soundtrack in our lives (too many!), that might be a plus.

For Sonic Adventure, the limitation of the XBLA version is immediately apparent even to those who haven’t played it before: it displays only in 4:3, with vertical bars (featuring a blue patterned background) on the sides of a widescreen display. A Sega rep told Joystiq that the code for Sonic Adventure couldn’t be altered to support widescreen as easily as Crazy Taxi‘s.

Kinect playable demo units now at Microsoft Stores

The Microsoft Store’s official Twitter account is inviting folks to try Kinect at its stores “nationwide,” which sounds a lot more impressive before the realization hits that there are only four locations in the entire country. The MS Twitter account also notes that Kinectimals will be shown off this weekend.

Anyway, if you live near one of the four stores found in the western part of the continent, go check out the new tech that’ll be available this November. If you don’t live close to a store, save that gas money until we get an idea of how much Kinect will actually cost.

Ratchet & Clank comics coming September 8

This will be the first year since the start of the Ratchet & Clank Future series that the franchise will be quiet on the PS3. Fans of Insomniac’s space-venturing duo need not fret too much, though. DC Comics’ WildStorm imprint is releasing a brand new Ratchet & Clank comic series this September, written by Insomniac’s TJ Fixman.

The new series will follow the events of the last game, A Crack in Time, and should satiate fans’ appetites for the series’ continuation. The comic will be available in retail stores and on the PSP Digital Comics service.

Preview: League of Legends, Season One

Riot Games’ League of Legends has been winning accolades and fans since it released last year for a few different reasons. It’s a highly polished version of Defense of the Ancients, the company has supported the game with continuous updates and new content, and oh yeah — it’s a free-to-play title.

Lately, Riot has been working on a major update they’re calling “Season One,” designed to make the game a little more compatible with competitive play, as well as implement some of the most requested features for the game. The update should be out within a few weeks, they told us, but on the floor of E3, we got to see some of the new tweaks in action.
