TechCrunch and VentureBeat both have sources claiming Disney is ready to purchase social gaming developer Playdom for over $600 million. There are currently obscene amounts of money being invested in the social gaming arena; just last year EA purchased Playfish, another big player in the space, for $300 million.

Disney Interactive Media, which continues to have annual losses, has been working on making or buying a mega-money maker. Split/Second obviously isn’t panning out, but Club Penguin seems to be doing fine. There’s also the question of how the company will eventually incorporate the Marvel properties, unless it opts to continue licensing those out. The Playdom purchase, if true, would give the company access to a demographic that its current mouse house of studios doesn’t directly service.

GoldenEye 007

Let’s clear one thing up: This GoldenEye Wii game is not your GoldenEye N64 game all prettied up. This is an original game based on the same Bond … movie (though featuring the Daniel Craig Bond). That’s not to say that the new GoldenEye 007 doesn’t borrow — what it legally can — from Rare’s classic console FPS, but be careful about expecting a modern port of the 1997 game known simply and lovingly as “Bond.” (That project is still not happening. )

At Nintendo’s E3 booth, I played a quick round of two-player split-screen multiplayer of this new GoldenEye, and it left a positive impression. I could have sworn my opponent and I had faced off in a classic Bond map (the Archives, I thought), but Activision insists this is an “original” level, in so much as it is not a recreation of one of Rare’s maps from the N64 game. Of course, Rare’s maps were based on sets from the movie, and Activision has the rights to have maps designed from these same sets. So, expect to get a sense of déjà vu when playing the new Goldeneye.

CVG is posting new footage of Metroid: Other M all week, starting with a weird cutscene depicting Samus as a space baby. We’re happy to see these videos now, but we’re also slightly hesitant, knowing that we’re going to see them again as unskippable in-game FMV.

Tor Books has announced that a new series of Halo novels are on the way. Not to be confused with the upcoming trilogy by Greg Bear, these will be penned by Karen Traviss, author of the Gears of War novels as well as the short story “Human Weakness” from the 2009 Halo Evolutions collection.

The first new novel to be penned by Traviss will serve as a sequel to Ghosts of Onyx, and will reveal the fate of its team of Spartans. The series promises to “explore the Halo Universe in the wake of the final events of Halo 3. ” Presumably, the novels will also contain a heavy does of alien murder. We’ve contacted Tor in hopes of pinning down a release window for the new novels. Meanwhile, Bear’s trilogy is set to debut this year.

Find the press release after the break.

First and foremost, that headline is the most skin-crawlingly nerdy thing we’ve ever committed to virtual paper, and we write about video games professionally on a daily basis. Moving on.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine (as transcribed by ZeldaDungeon), Eiji Aonuma commented on the placement of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in the oft-speculated timeline of the franchise. More notable than the game’s positioning was Aonuma’s confirmation of an overarching Zelda timeline — though he explained that it’s a “confidential document” to which only “myself, Mr. Miyamoto and the director of the title” have access.

Aonuma revealed that Skyward Sword comes before Ocarina of Time in said timeline, but wouldn’t comment on whether it’s the first game in the chronological series. He explained, “for us to add titles to the series, we have to have a way of putting the titles before or after each other,” hence the secrecy. That makes sense — as long as they’re all comfortable with the swirling, black morass of insanity that’s surfaced due to their reticence.

Another busy week in MMO news from Joystiq sister site Massively. com, as Star Wars: The Old Republic reveals more info on species and advanced careers, Guild Wars 2 reinvents the stale MMO quest mechanic and Dungeons & Dragons Online inches its way towards MMO domination on the NPD charts:

Species and advanced careers unleashed in Star Wars: The Old Republic
Okay fans, you can finally sit back and quit wearing out the the edge of your seat. Star Wars: The Old Republic has revealed its first species. That’s right! In an exclusive play session with TheGalacticStruggle. com Bioware revealed the first non-human species whose story you will be able to tell: Rattataki.
Guild Wars 2 Lead Designer reveals new information about questing and content
In Guild Wars, we’re all familiar with the quest system and the giant green exclamation point. In such an immersive and beautiful world, it’s admittedly a bit jarring when an NPC has that strange floaty thing that sticks out like a sore thumb — or like a giant lime-green exclamation point. Filling your field of vision with a big black rectangle with a few paragraphs of text and a “check yes or no” acceptance option didn’t exactly alleviate the problem.
DDO jumps to third-most-popular spot in MMO survey
Several interesting changes have come about in the past year: former World of Warcraft players are turning to different games than they have in the past, the subscription model is a lot less popular these days, and Dungeons and Dragons Online has knocked Guild Wars out of the comfy #3 spot it enjoyed for the two previous years.
Examining the Peregrine: Do we need another Power Glove?
At first glance, this glove looks like something you’d wear to batting practice or to tee off on the 9th hole, but it really is a fascinating piece of comfortable electronics. However, is it something that we, as MMO gamers, would need or even want?

If you’re one of those cautious, try-before-you-buy types, you may want to check out the recently posted beta application for Atari’s online racer, Test Drive Unlimited 2. It’s pretty much your basic application: Name, gender, address, computer specs, which consoles you own, how long you spend playing games each week, and detailed report on your sexual history over the past eighteen months.

You’ll need to register for an Atari account to fill in these parameters, thought if you’ve already got a Champions Online or Star Trek Online account, you should already have access to the application. Also, we were kidding about the whole “sexual history” thing. They only want to know about the past six months. Whew!

[Thanks, B1gg_Randall]
