For those of you who have to keep your Spartan dressed in the latest styles, GameStop is offering exclusive armor and helmet configurations with pre-orders of Halo: Reach. Those who reserve the game will receive tokens for a Spartan Recon Helmet with Visor/Blast Shield and a UA Multi-Threat Mjolnir Mark V(B) Armor, which features a unique chestplate design and a grenade belt. Can’t you hear it? “Hey, (your name here)! Looking good in that UAMTMMVBA! ” You and your Multi-Threat, Blast Shield-sporting friends can mock the Spartans who dare to show up wearing default armor.

Of course, you also receive a $20 coupon, just like those offered by Walmart and Amazon.

Our MMO-centric sister site Massively received a whole mess of gameplay details and screenshots from Bigpoint’s promising browser-based MMO, Battlestar Galactica Online. Players will be able to choose between the Human and Cylon factions, will be able to create their own out-of-ship avatars, and will progress through individual quests and story-based missions exclusive to their own factions. For instance, Cylons might be tasked with preparing a fresh slice of toast. (Because Cylons look like toasters. Obviously.)

For more details, check out the info Massively managed to glean from Bigpoint. For visual images you can see with your eyes, check out the gallery below.

“This is gonna change the world.” Since our E3 meeting with OnLive CEO Steve Perlman and Joe Bentley, director of games & media development, wasn’t filmed, we have no way to convey to you the absolute sincerity with which Bentley said these words. He further assured us, “I left a very successful startup to do this. ”

Indeed he did — three years ago, Bentley quit his “architect” job at outsourcing firm LiveOps (where he built software) for OnLive, after seeing parent company Rearden Labs’ Mova motion capture technology. And now? Now he’s busy helping manage the launch and continued growth of OnLive. He’s also busy trying to convince us of the service’s promise in the coming months and years.

Preview: Mafia 2 (and Mafia 2 3D)

Mafia 2 feels, from the demo we played, like it could just as easily be called Grand Theft Auto: Godfather. If that’s what you’re looking for from the mob-o-rama sequel, then celebrate by throwing someone off a pier with cement shoes.

It’s actually pretty hard to note anything unexpected or different in the Mafia 2 demo. Almost everything you’d expect from a game that borrows heavily from the GTA IV template is there, both the good and the bad.

Valve has announced the latest mutation game mode in Left 4 Dead 2: Last Gnome on Earth. In order to win, the survivors simply have to carry the garden gnome through any of the single-player campaigns. There’s a catch though: the Infected will immediately swarm on anyone carrying the gnome. Valve also warns players to be careful setting the gnome down as “a boomer explosion will send him flying.” The mutation is only available in campaign mode.

Valve also added that Realism Vs mode, as promised, will become permanent starting next week for everyone that owns “The Passing” DLC. Furthermore, one of the mutations released so far will make a comeback next week, with Valve noting that the mutation will be voted in by players. The candidates include Follow the Liter, Bleed Out and this week’s mutation, Last Gnome on Earth. Finally, Valve will be playing Left 4 Dead 2 with the community this weekend. Check out a list of Steam and Xbox Live gamertags the team will be using after the break.

Activision has declared war on the calm, blue and oh-so-smug skies with the announcement of Apache: Air Assault, a game where you don’t fly a cool airplane because you’re too busy piloting a freakin’ sweet helichopter. Russian developer Gaijin Entertainment (IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey) promises several variations of Apache birds, each outfitted with sick military weaponry, “highly-detailed damage modeling” and the ability to destroy tanks who are too stupid to fly into the air and fight back.

Due this fall on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Apache: Air Assault will offer an “Arcade” mode for those who want to blow things up right away, as well as a “Realistic” mode for players who to blow things up the right way. You can also expect competitive online multiplayer and a local co-op mode that has two people sitting in the same helichopter, going let’s go left no let’s go right oh it doesn’t matter because we can fire like sixteen missiles into that guy’s face this is awesome hahaha.

North Carolina is going to provide some epic tax breaks to video game developers. According to the ESA, a bill signed by Governor Beverly Perdue will provide a 15 percent tax credit on “wages and compensation for employees involved in digital media production, or the creation of a platform or engine to run such media. ” Of course, the big winner here is North Carolina-based Epic Games, which swims in a lake of Unreal Engine money and develops games in its spare time. However, other benefactors of the tax breaks include Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and another dozen or so developers in the state. The incentives take effect January 1, 2011.

Publishers, developers and governments use tax breaks like Ezio wields the hidden blade. It’s a weapon, either for financial defense (which seems to be the case in North Carolina) or aggression. With Canada’s relentless siren call of tax incentives, if other countries and states don’t step up their game, The Great White North will continue its Tim Hortons-fueled march to eventually developing most of the world’s video games.

So what’s it gonna be this week? A strictly multiplayer first-person shooter or a strictly single-player third-person laugher? On the one hand there is Blacklight: Tango Down, an FPS that promises extensive customization player progression. On the other is Monkey Island 2: Special Edition, which comes packed with a new adventure for Guybrush Threepwood and, of course, yuks.

Blacklight will set you back 1200 MS Points ($15), while Monkey Island 2 costs 800 MS Points ($10, conveniently only half as much as you should ever pay for a computer game).

This will be the first year since the start of the Ratchet & Clank Future series that the franchise will be quiet on the PS3. Fans of Insomniac’s space-venturing duo need not fret too much, though. DC Comics’ WildStorm imprint is releasing a brand new Ratchet & Clank comic series this September, written by Insomniac’s TJ Fixman.

The new series will follow the events of the last game, A Crack in Time, and should satiate fans’ appetites for the series’ continuation. The comic will be available in retail stores and on the PSP Digital Comics service.
