Shigeru Miyamoto
Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime may be committed to improving the online experience on the Big N’s platforms, but legendary designer and Guy Who Makes Things Happen[TM] at the company, Shigeru Miyamoto, doesn’t seem inclined to exactly reinvent network play with 3DS. “We look at [online] more in terms of what can we do to provide that Nintendo flavor or magic to that community or connection experience,” he told IGN Australia in an E3 interview the site just now found behind its virtual sofa cushions.

“One of the ways that we’re looking at doing that, is the idea of really strengthening the tag mode functionality,” he explained, referring to an “always on” data-sharing feature most famously employed by Dragon Quest IX on DS. “We think that there will be some unique ideas that come out of that, and that it will have a very unique Nintendo flavor to it. ” So, not voice chat or friend code-free multiplayer then?

Speaking of exchanging things with other 3DS owners: what of Miis? Already transferable from Wii to current DS titles such as Tomodachi Collection and Personal Trainer: Walking, Miyamoto commented that the pint-sized avatars moving to-and-fro between future platforms is “something that we’re definitely giving consideration to,” and that there’s a desire to “continue to try to allow people to use their Miis on different Nintendo systems going forward. ” We can certainly get down with the idea of 3D Miis — or, as we call them, “3Miis. “

Our MMO-centric sister site Massively received a whole mess of gameplay details and screenshots from Bigpoint’s promising browser-based MMO, Battlestar Galactica Online. Players will be able to choose between the Human and Cylon factions, will be able to create their own out-of-ship avatars, and will progress through individual quests and story-based missions exclusive to their own factions. For instance, Cylons might be tasked with preparing a fresh slice of toast. (Because Cylons look like toasters. Obviously.)

For more details, check out the info Massively managed to glean from Bigpoint. For visual images you can see with your eyes, check out the gallery below.

T.Q. Jefferson, director of Marvel Games, might not have had the element of surprise on his side when revealing the inclusion of the Mighty Thor in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but the confirmation was more than welcome when he made the announcement at the MvC 3 panel at Comic-Con.

“Bringing him into this game is huge,” Jefferson said. “The fact that we’ve got the movie coming out and another Thor game coming out from Sega, there’s an appetite for Thor out there among the fanbase. ” For the especially curious among you, Jefferson revealed that the version of the Asgardian god used in this game will be Thor as drawn by Olivier Coipel in the latest comic series. Update: Now with video!

TechCrunch and VentureBeat both have sources claiming Disney is ready to purchase social gaming developer Playdom for over $600 million. There are currently obscene amounts of money being invested in the social gaming arena; just last year EA purchased Playfish, another big player in the space, for $300 million.

Disney Interactive Media, which continues to have annual losses, has been working on making or buying a mega-money maker. Split/Second obviously isn’t panning out, but Club Penguin seems to be doing fine. There’s also the question of how the company will eventually incorporate the Marvel properties, unless it opts to continue licensing those out. The Playdom purchase, if true, would give the company access to a demographic that its current mouse house of studios doesn’t directly service.

Westpac net banking down for most of day

The downtime message that greeted customers.

The downtime message that greeted customers.

Customers who bank with Westpac were unable to access their account online for most of today, with the bank citing service degradation and a software patch as the cause of the problem.

Service degradation is usually caused by a number of requests bombarding a computer server at once.

Has this affected you? Text 0424 SMS SMH (+61 424 767 764), email us at scoop@smh.com.au

“Dear Westpac. Please fix your internet banking, it has been buggered all day. Thanks,” wrote Twitter user Nola James.

Bank spokesman David Lording confirmed the problem.

“I understand that there was a patch upgrade with the servers last night and that caused the difficulty,” Mr Lording said.

He said Westpac’s IT team had reverted the changes made and that the service was now operating normally.

For most of the day the bank’s servers were running at about 25 per cent capacity, Lording said, causing degradation to occur when Westpac’s customers attempted to access their account.

“There was some access available, but they put in a patch last night and it had to be backed out. So the system was still operating but it was operating at a sub-optimal level,” he said.

He said the downtime was not security related.

Lording also said he wanted to apologise to affected customers.

The company earlier acknowledged the issue on Twitter.

“Yes there is intermittent problems with Internet Banking, it’s being worked on, try again in a little while,” Westpac wrote to its Twitter followers this morning.

Throughout the day the company continued to address user concern: “… Assure you we’re working on it, service is degraded so keep trying and you should be able to get on,” it said.

Yesterday CBA was faced with an even larger outage which affected eftpos and ATMs.
